cancer support 01Evidence-based complementary therapies such as herbal medicine, nutritional therapeutics and diet are used alongside conventional cancer treatments (such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy or other medical treatment approaches) with the aim of enhancing effectiveness, reducing side effects and supporting patients’ health and wellbeing throughout their treatment.

Clinical research shows that natural therapeutics can have a significant effect on your body by regulating biochemical pathways and enzyme function, protecting and repairing vulnerable healthy tissue, and modulating immune function to mention just a few. There is a growing body of research showing the beneficial effects of using selected Complementary Medicines at various stages of cancer treatment. It can be used:

  1. As a complementary treatment to enhance survival prospects (by using agents that can help sensitise cancer cells to treatment), reduce the short and long-term side effects and improve quality of life during conventional therapies.
  2. Post-treatment to support recovery, prevent recurrence and improve wellbeing.
  3. To assist the body’s natural defences after a precancerous or early stage detection and to protect against the development of cancer in people with a strong family history.

When used appropriately, Complementary Medicine can have a significantly positive result. It is important however, to be under professional guidance when using natural therapies. Many of the natural treatments that come up on popular search engines could be contraindicated with other treatments or medications you are taking and will also not necessarily be at clinically effective doses.

An important outcome of using complementary medicine is that you gain information which empowers you to be able to take a more active role in your own health care.

The experience of getting a diagnosis of cancer can be enormously overwhelming and so you are encouraged to bring a close family member or carer to your appointments to both support you and be informed regarding recommendations and support plans.

Initial Consultation

60-90 minutes
(online or in person at the clinic)

Your initial consultation is structured so that your current state of health, cancer type, past, present or future treatments, pathology and/or surgery reports, medical team, medications you are taking, and lifestyle habits can be understood in as much detail as possible. This is a vital part of the process to ensure you get the most from your initial consultation.

During your first consultation Nina will:

  • Discuss your own and your family’s health history.
  • Refer you for any necessary blood or other testing.
  • Discuss the medications that you take to ensure that treatments will not interact adversely with them.
  • Provide you with dietary recommendations, including specific functional foods for your cancer type that have shown benefit in the research.

Following your initial consultation, Nina will spend time formulating a detailed, tailored treatment plan to suit you including herbal and nutritional therapeutics and dietary advice. Herbal medicines prescribed for your presentation and with your conventional treatment regime are formulated individually according to your symptoms and goals for treatment.

Follow Up Consultations

30-45 minutes
(online or in person at the clinic)

Your follow-up appointments will review and assess your progress, identifying anything that may be hindering your success. Any pathology test results requested from previous appointments will also be evaluated.

Coming prepared for your consultation

So that your needs can be best assessed please bring with you any recent blood test results, or other test results. If you do not have copies usually your doctor will be able to post or email a copy to you.

Taking note of or bringing in any medications and supplements that you are taking will also help to determine your treatment plan.

Please ensure your intake form is completed and sent back to Nina at least two days prior to your initial consultation.
